バーをたたき、上方に大きく弾んだ自らのシュートに、駒野は天を仰ぎ、頭を抱えた。うつむいてセンターラインの仲間のところへ戻る駒野を抱きかかえるようにして迎え、列の中へ招き入れたのは、大会前にその腕からキャプテンマークを剥奪された中沢だった。 　5人目のキッカー、カルドソが決勝のゴールを決めると、歓喜の輪を抜けだし、1人のパラグアイ選手が駒野に駆け寄り、額をすりつけるようにして何かを語りかけた。自身4人目のキッカーとして落ち着いてゴール中央にPKを決めたアエドバルデスだった。おそらくスペイン語だったのだろう。駒野は何を言われているのか分からないはずだが、しきりにうなづいていた。気持ちは通じていたのだろう。 　一番長く駒野の肩を抱いていたのは、松井だった。そして駒野以上に泣いていた。何も言わず、しゃくり上げ、ただただ肩を抱き続けていたようにみえた。そして逆の肩を、阿部が抱いた。 　サポーターへのあいさつに駒野を背を押していざなったのは、稲本だった。努めて笑顔だった。駒野は笑顔を返すことはできなかった。それでも稲本は笑みを送り続けた。 　ロッカ－ルームに引き上げ、ミックスゾーンに姿をみせた駒野は、無言でうつむき、報道陣の前を通り過ぎた。バッジオが、バレジも味わったPK戦の残酷。だが多くの仲間に支えられ、駒野は立ち直らなくてはならない。
